International Economic Fair in Mostar: Conference held on the Intellectual Property System on the Path of BiH to the EU

Mostar, April 18, 2024 – Institute for Intellectual Property of Bosnia and Herzegovina, in cooperation with the project "EU support for intellectual property rights in BiH", financed by the European Union, held a conference entitled "Intellectual Property System on the Path of Bosnia and Herzegovina to the EU".

At the conference, held on Thursday, April 18, within the framework of the 25th International Economic Fair in Mostar, the project "EU support for intellectual property rights" was presented, while the second topic of the conference was "Perspective of AI in the intellectual property system".

"During the Fair, the Institute, through promotional materials at its booth, strives to provide information and answer everyone to questions from its competence. This year, we are participating in yet another way. Namely, with a conference on the topic "Intellectual Property System on the Path of Bosnia and Herzegovina to the EU", we presented the activities of the project ‘EU support for intellectual property rights in BiH’. This project highlights the commitment of the European Union to assist Bosnia and Herzegovina and raise its intellectual property framework to achieve European standards. The main goal of the project is to harmonize the entire legal regulations with the norms, i.e. with EU legislation," said Josip Merdžo, director of the Institute for Intellectual Property of BiH.

By providing the necessary expertise and support to the Institute for Intellectual Property, as well as to the creative industries in BiH, the European Union contributes to the harmonization of legislation with European standards and the improvement of the innovative environment in BiH, as well as the competitiveness of the economy.

"Although it has been present in technology for a long time, artificial intelligence (AI) has become a staple in the field of high technologies in the last year. So far, more than 3.5 million patent applications have been filed in 90 countries relating to AI. There are numerous controversies related to the violation of the basic postulates in the homocentrically set system of intellectual property and this is the reason for numerous considerations and confrontations of views from the point of view of philosophy, ethics and commercial expectations of investors. The EU is in the process of adopting a regulation on artificial intelligence, which will regulate this matter for the first time," said Miodrag Marković, head of the project team, after holding a lecture on the topic "Perspective of AI in the intellectual property system".

He added that the future has not only begun, but we are living it to the fullest extent today, no matter how much we may not be aware of it and emphasized that something that we have so far tied only to sci-fi films, becomes a reality, with all the good and bad consequences.
