Around 1,400 delegates, including close to 20 ministers, from WIPO member states participated in the work of the General Assemblies, the largest number ever, to determine future activities in line with the WIPO strategic direction approved by member states in 2022. The WIPO treaties that form the backbone of the global intellectual property ecosystem which supports innovators and creators around the world were discussed.
The Assemblies were held following a diplomatic conference in May 2024, at which WIPO member states approved by consensus a new Treaty on Intellectual Property, Genetic Resources and Related Traditional Knowledge, marking multilateral progress ahead of the final round of negotiations on the design law treaty, scheduled for November in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
In other activities within the Assemblies, WIPO presented the nine winners of the WIPO Global Awards 2024 program, which recognizes exceptional companies and individuals who use intellectual property to make a positive impact at home and abroad.
